ABOUT THE WORK

"I’m local to the Bay Area, but was not born in SF. I feel when I meet people that are, they are a unicorn in a city that constantly has people coming and going. I happened to marry an SF native and I’ve always been drawn to the city since I was young, living in the suburbs of Santa Clara. We live south of Sutro Tower and Twin Peaks. I feel whenever we have people visiting SF, on a clear night, we’d take them to this area to see the amazing views. On those nights with just a little cloud cover, the Universe displays amazing sunsets like the one in this painting. The abstracted tower was my way of downplaying the architecture to focus more on the magic and beauty of the sky. Beautiful skies have always been my muse for my work."—Catherine Gutierrez

This work is included in the "Urban Tides: A San Francisco Story" group exhibition at Voss Gallery (July 13 - August 17, 2024).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

"I grew up in San Jose, CA where I began drawing as a child before discovering oil painting as a student at St. Francis High School in Mountain View. I credit my oil painting teacher, Mrs. Sara Totah, with introducing me to the amazing medium and helping me develop my craft over two semesters. Based on that foundation, I developed different approaches to my oil paintings over the last couple of decades — brush, palette knife and drip or a mix of all three. With these different styles, I’ve been able to experiment with how one style can convey one feeling versus another. I use oil because I fell in love with its saturation in color and how through layers, you can create dynamic colors and depth. My top favorite artists are J. M. W. Turner, Helen Frankenthaler, Emil Nolde, Richard Diebenkorn, Edgar Degas, and Jeremy Mann (Oakland-based artist). The way that Turner created light in his paintings captivated me from the start. I strive to have depth and light in every painting I create. This is my way of sharing my light with others. My philosophy on art is that its all an experiment. Every time I step into the studio, I’m thinking of what could I do that would bring me joy. It can be painting a painting to just mixing paint and creating color studies. I am constantly learning. There is not a day that goes by when I walk out of the studio not knowing something new. I currently live in San Francisco with my family and paint in a studio in our backyard."Catherine Gutierrez
