ABOUT THE WORK
"With this piece, I would like to encourage viewers to research the true history of the original inhabitants of the bay area. In 1848, San Francisco was the gateway and landing area of the Forty Niners. The Gold Rush that followed forever changed the lives of Bay Area Native Americans. In just 20 years, 80 percent of Bay Area Native Americans were wiped out. It is important to preserve and share our history as it relates to San Francisco and the Bay Area, so that we will not be erased from its historical narrative. The History of San Francisco should include its original inhabitants because we are still here in spite of the mass genocide; our story is about survival and resilience."—Vincent Escareno
This work is included in the "Urban Tides: A San Francisco Story" group exhibition at Voss Gallery (July 13 - August 17, 2024).
