This work is part of The Tracy Piper's "SEEN Volume 4," the fourth iteration of a collaborative art project of 50 eye paintings that were made during the Spring of 2025. For this series, the artist organized an open call for her collectors, fans, and fellow artists to be featured as one of her models. Each participant answered the same question: What does it mean to feel seen? Each painting and response is featured in the artist’s fifth book aptly titled “SEEN Volume 4."

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FEEL SEEN?

"You know how butterflies can see more colors than human beings? Some humans can perceive and emanate more genders than others. Which is a beautiful, precious thing and I refuse to let anyone tell me otherwise.

Gender isn't a binary, and it's not a continuum. If anything it's a cartesian coordinate system -- you could be very male and very female at the same time, or neither of both. But really, gender is a galaxy, an infinite set of stars. I don't understand why some people are so hell bent on a reductive perspective that collapses joy.

Every time someone misgenders me, it reminds me that they don't see me the way I see myself. It's a pain I've gotten used to, the kind of nagging ache that is more noticeable when it's not present.

When I'm among people who understand the energy I embody, without needing an explanation, it's transcendent. Revolutionary."Tilde Thurium
