ABOUT THE WORK
"Being American, we come in all shapes and sizes and ethnicities. But we are all Americans! We breath the same air, we walk the same ground, we sit in the same traffic. We aren’t all named Sally with blonde hair and blue eyes (don’t worry Sally, we love you too). Rajni is my American Daughter of Indian descent. You aren’t an outsider Rajni, you are one of us, you are beautiful and you are loved. Inspired by my childhood friends and the diverse ethnicities they came from. Because Oakland is hella diverse and hella connected!
These fictionalized portraits are pieced together to create someone we all know. It could be your neighbor, friend, sister, child, me or you... belittled, told we were less than, ostracized for our differences. In this oversaturated world where we are told who to be, how to look, what to do, these portraits are here to tell you that you can just be you. You are enough. You are worthy. You are loved."—The Tracy Piper
