ABOUT THE WORK

"The moment I stepped foot in San Francisco I fell in love. It’s a love story that’s been going on for thirty-five years now. It was the uniqueness of the city that first got my attention and held me captive. From intoxicating steep hills and views in every direction, to the Victorian architecture and cool funky neighborhoods, to the brisk breeze off the bay and the magic of the fog - I knew that San Francisco was where I needed to be and one year later it was home. It’s where I met and married my husband, raised three children, and honed my creativity. It’s where I’ve been able to surround myself with like-minded people and find a supportive artist community. I never tire of or take for granted the beauty that surrounds me, I’m so grateful San Francisco is still my home!"—Mary Southall

This work is included in the "Urban Tides: A San Francisco Story" group exhibition at Voss Gallery (July 13 - August 17, 2024).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mary Southall is a San Francisco based artist working in acrylic and mixed media. Born in Amarillo, Texas, Mary’s earliest memories are of the vast Texas landscape and sky that she experienced by her father’s side, a 5th generation farmer and rancher. Always drawing, painting, making dollhouses and mud pies, her creativity was nurtured by her artistic mother, a technical draftsman by trade. Mary earned a BFA degree from Texas State University. After graduating college she began her career by joining Cibola Studio/Gallery cooperative and later went on to co-found Acme Art Gallery in downtown Austin before moving to San Francisco. She has been in numerous shows in Texas and California including The Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and The California Museum in Sacramento. Publications of her work include a Celebration of Craftswomen campaign, San Francisco Annual Open Studios promotional material and catalog cover, and a line of greeting cards. Mary continues to pursue her career, creating vibrant paintings and mixed media works out of her Hunter’s Point Shipyard studio.
