ANGELA HAN

Portal II, 2023
Oil and Acrylic on Canvas
8 x 10 x 1.5 in

ABOUT THE WORK

Portal II is inspired by the Chinese myth, “Nuwa Mends the Sky,” and Makoto Shinkai's recent film, “Suzume.” In the former, the goddess Nuwa patches the broken heavens with a mixture of 5-colored stones: red, yellow, qing (blue/green), black, and white - the five altogether signifying great power. In the latter, protagonists Suzume and Souta must close and lock enchanted doorways located at abandoned ruins throughout Japan in order to prevent a legendary beast from wreaking havoc. This painting invites the viewer to wonder: What lies beyond broken heavens and doorways to the other side?

This work was included in the "Postcards from Paradise" juried group exhibition at Voss Gallery (May 26 - July 1, 2023).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Angela Han is a Chinese-American artist, musician, and educator who creates art inspired by music and mythology. She weaves together diverse elements from Asian lore in a process of contemporary myth-making to assemble new narratives that celebrate the courage and creativity of women. Her paintings feature otherworldly landscapes influenced by these narratives and showcase vibrant colors, thickly layered paint, intricate details etched by color shapers, and “lyrical” compositions. Han wraps her audience in a profound sense of possibility by inviting them into a paradise where their imaginations are ignited, and educate them on the impactful work and life experiences of women.

HANGING & CARE

Artwork is ready to hang on the wall; hanging wire is secured on the back (nail and hook needed). Dust raw canvas with a clean, soft brush and HEPA-filtered vacuum to clean. Using a new, clean brush prevents transfer of grime from previous dustings.
