ABOUT THE WORK

“At the core of my artistic exploration is a desire to transcend limits, be it the boundaries of line, color, or the physical constraints of a canvas. I seek to enable interaction between the artwork, its surroundings, and the observer.

Drawing from my roots in silkscreen printing, I approach the surface of each piece with a methodology akin to printmaking. Using birch panels allows me to create a stencil and apply flat, hard-edged color shapes as the base for painted black lines that define the subject. While the two appear to coexist, it’s the tension between the line and the color spilling beyond it that gives the subject energy.

In some pieces, the painted line extends beyond the dimensions of the wood panel by transitioning to wire, an element that adds a kinetic element to the work. The dynamic interplay of wire, light and shape allows the subject to constantly redefine itself with changing shadows and evolving forms, in contrast to the flat color.

In “Wired,” the painted line morphs to wire and extends both outward and towards the viewer, beyond the wood panel. Shadows change as the sun moves across the sky. It’s a collaboration, where the artwork and its environment coalesce, inviting the observer to bear witness. Through this process I endeavor to redefine traditional perceptions of painting, space, light and the marking of time.”—Hélène Paulette Côte
