ABOUT THE WORK

"San Francisco enchants you with an irresistible blend of nature and architecture. It's not just the classic landmarks that inspire; it's the hidden nooks and crannies, like the view in my painting ‘Thorp Lane from Clover Lane‘ in the Castro. Intimate vistas of hillsides adorned with homes and lush foliage are the quieter unsung vignettes that can be found while exploring the neighborhoods on foot. The city reveals its true beauty in the mundane, in the overlooked corners and the quiet alleyways. Walking through San Francisco, you encounter not only the grandeur of the built environment, but also swaths of greenery that meander through the urban landscape, serving as a poignant reminder of the city's connection to nature. These rivers of greenery that flow through the city remind us that underneath the iconic skyline lies the great natural heritage that first drew people to this incredible city."Natalie Friedman

This work is included in the "Urban Tides: A San Francisco Story" group exhibition at Voss Gallery (July 13 - August 17, 2024).

ABOUT THE WORK

"Through my art, I seek to understand and celebrate the places I inhabit. Mixing elements of space, light, shapes, and colors, I aim to evoke a twin sense of familiarity and wonder, illuminating the beauty in small ordinary moments.

I bring these commonplace tableaus to life primarily using acrylic on canvas, wood, or paper. I take photographs of these spaces to use as source images and then use leftover paint to create a ground. I build in layers, letting memory and impressions guide the process. The finished pieces are not literal representations but abstracted reflections.

My creations are meant to serve as visual reminders to appreciate the present, wherever you may find yourself."Natalie Friedman
