"The constantly evolving visual narrative ~ urban tides ~ of signage in San Francisco, and the history and stories those signs hold, fascinates me and I am drawn to explore this in my work.

The Last Doggie Diner illustrates the one remaining Doggie Diner head, which at one time was a Bay Area institution with many Doggie Diners across San Francisco. I love how the Doggie Diner head evokes memories and stories for San Franciscans ~ and how the Doggie Diner art pieces I have created have been the catalyst for beautiful conversations with strangers about their past memories of a constantly evolving city.

In this piece, I have incorporated an outline of the Carousel diner, which was the last Doggie Diner restaurant and no longer exists. The empty frame and palm trees running through are symbolic of the disappearance of the diner, like so many treasured neighborhood restaurants, corner stores, shops and launderettes. I hope that it evokes memories, as well as thoughts about what neighborhood institutions mean to us now, and the challenges for them to remain here and not be washed away with the current tides."Suze Riley

This work is included in the "Urban Tides: A San Francisco Story" group exhibition at Voss Gallery (July 13 - August 17, 2024).

"I am a British artist currently based in San Francisco, specialising in live portraits and mixed-media papercut art. My passion is in connecting with people and creating minimal, beautiful portraits to capture their essence and style.  I also love to make artwork inspired by the ocean and nostalgic summer trips to the seaside ~ ocean bathers, motel signs, amusement rides, ice cream, beach huts, kitsch towns with faded glory, colourful candy & sweets.

Before, I worked in marketing at Penguin Random House in the U.K., leading campaigns for authors including Lee Child, Sophie Kinsella and for Paula Hawkins' The Girl on The Train.

I have a BA(hons) in Illustration from UWE Bristol, and an MA in Graphic Design from the London College of Communication.  Since my college days, I have focused my creative practice on papercutting, bookmaking and figure drawing.  I have always sought to use recycled and found materials in my work, to give new life and beauty to discarded and forgotten materials.

All my work has a strong focus on form, line and use of negative space.  I love to strip a composition back to its core elements, contrasting with intricate painted or cut details."Suze Riley
