ABOUT THE WORK

"This piece holds a special place in my heart as it embodies the future I hope to see in San Francisco. A city that is open, inspiring, and not afraid to grow and embrace its uniqueness. I imagine a city that embraces growth, brings back the neon signs of its past and celebrates the rich culture that makes this city one of a kind. A city that refuses to become stagnant and stuck in its ways and instead a city that looks forward to the endless possibility of hope and dreams we all hold."—Mike Sanchez

This work is included in the "Urban Tides: A San Francisco Story" group exhibition at Voss Gallery (July 13 - August 17, 2024).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mike Sanchez is a contemporary artist whose work focuses on period-based objects, structures, and places. Through the use of digital and analog photography, sculpture, and mixed media techniques he builds environments and objects that exist at the intersection of fantasy and historical documentation.

Mike grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and graduated from the University of New Mexico with his Bachelor of Fine Arts. Born in the late 80’s Mike experienced the technological boom of the ’90s and early 2000s. Growing up in these times influenced his passion for cinema, pop culture, and photography.

Mike’s body of work reflects this upbringing, merging nostalgia for vintage technology with pop iconology, surrealism, and whimsy. The images and objects he creates transport the viewer to a place or time that feels both somehow familiar and wholly unreal. Each piece invites the viewer to explore a little deeper and find their own connection to the past, present, and future.

HANGING & CARE

Artwork is ready to hang on the wall; hanging wire is secured on the back (nail and hook needed). Dust raw canvas with a clean, soft brush and HEPA-filtered vacuum to clean. Using a new, clean brush prevents transfer of grime from previous dustings.
