Wood & Oil on Plywood

"The wood I use in my work comes from local demolished houses and old furniture. As I strip and re-mill objects, I bring to the surface the organic origins of our urban surroundings. The wood becomes the brushstroke on my canvas. Open angles guide the fluidity of lines, exploring ideas of continuity and transformation. By creating something new out of something old, I reflect on the process of recirculating, which is a condition for life to exist as seen in nature's continuous renewal." —Alexandra Cicorschi
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alexandra Cicorschi is an artist living and working in San Francisco, California. She studied fine arts at the Bucharest National University of Arts in Romania and the Bauhaus University in Germany, where she focused on traditional etching. Her passion for woodworking developed after she moved to California and started experimenting with locally sourced materials.
Originally from Romania where she lived through the end of the communist era, she reflects in her work on the rapid transition she has witnessed in her lifespan, between a mentality shaped by scarcity to one of abundance. Creative reuse fueled by limited resources was one of the most valuable teachings of her childhood and an inspiration to her.
