The Stonewall riots (1969) were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBT community in response to a police raid that began at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. These riots are widely considered to constitute one of the most important events leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the US. Learn more about the uprising.
